Delhi schools to remain closed for next 5 days amid cold wave

Delhi school will be closed for the next five days from Nursery to Class 5 due to cold weather conditions. The Delhi government increased the winter holidays till 10 January but subsequently reversed the decision. Delhi, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Punjab experienced a cold day without sunlight. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts cold to severe conditions in Delhi, Punjab, Rajasthan and Haryana. 

The temperature is crucially below normal, with minimum temperatures ranging from 6-15 C and maximum temperatures ranging from 9-16 C. Anticipate rainfall, thunderstorms, and hailstorms in North India from January 8th to 10th. Preparation for the Republic Day parade continues in the cold and foggy weather. In North India, there is no marked change in minimum temperature is expected for the next four days. 

On Sunday, Delhi Minister Atishi announced the closure of schools in Delhi for the next five days, until January 12, for students from Nursery to Class five, citing ongoing cold weather conditions. 

Atishi announced in a post on X that In Delhi, the school will be closed for the next 5 days due to the ongoing cold weather conditions. 

The Delhi Government increase the winter holidays until January 10 for all government-aided and unaided identified private schools in the National Capital Territory (NCT), specifying harsh cold waves and IMD’s yellow alert. Nevertheless, shortly after releasing the statement, the Delhi Government abolished the order concerning the stretching of winter holidays in schools within the national capital. 

Along with Delhi, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Punjab also experience a cold day to severe cold day, with sunlight. The maximum temperatures recorded at different stations exhibited a notable departure from the usual range for this time of the season.

Cold to severe cold conditions are expected to persevere over Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, and Rajasthan for the next day, observed by a notable decrease thereafter. 

In many areas of Punjab and Haryana, maximum temperatures range from 9-12 C, and In North Rajasthan, Delhi, and Northwest Madhya Pradesh range from 13-16 C. The recorded temperatures in these areas are 4-9°C lower than the seasonal norm.

In Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Chandigarh-Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Northwest Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand, minimum temperatures range from 6-15 C. Today, the lowest temperature reported was in Sikar, Rajasthan. 

The Delhi skyline remained shrouded in a gray hue as a persistent cold wave enveloped the city. People sought warmth by gathering around bonfires, with temperatures dropping. 

A similar condition unfolded in Agra, where people were captured by a bonfire, enduring the ongoing cold wave in several parts of Uttar Pradesh. Agra witnesses morning fog followed by a predominantly clear sky later, as per the IMD, with the minimum temperature settling at 7°C and the maximum temperature reaching 19°C. As cold waves persisted in Varanasi, the city stayed veiled in a layer of fog. 

Northwest and Central India have experienced an improved spell of rainfall assisted by thunderstorms from the 8th to the 10th of January, according to the IMD. 

Yet, the preparation for the Republic Day parade on January 26th took place at Kartavya Path, with lasting cold waves and fog surviving in the national capital. 

As per the IMD, no significant change in minimum temperatures is expected across North India in the next four days.
