If a user does not open WhatsApp in the seven days, the message will disappear. Although the preview of the messages might still be displayed in notifications until WhatsApp is opened. When you reply to a message, the first message is repeated. If you reply to a disappearing message, the repeated message might reside in the chat after seven days. If a disappearing message is forwarded to a chat with disappearing messages off, the messages will not disappear in the forwarded chat. If a user creates a backup before a message disappears, the disappearing message will be comprised in the backup. Disappearing messages will be deleted when a user alters from a backup.

Before you proceed, ensure that you have the latest version of WhatsApp installed on your smartphone. For iPhone users, that would be version 2.21.121.4, and for Android users that would be version 2.21.206.15.

When this is sorted, go ahead and follow these steps to enable disappearing messages in WhatsApp.

  1. Open a WhatsApp chat
  2. Click Contact Info
  3. After than scroll down to find the Disappearing Messages feature
  4. The feature is disabled by default. Click Continue, followed by clicking On to enable this feature
  5. For each chat, you will have to enable this feature individually. When you do, your messages will automatically be deleted after seven days.

It is possible to store the disappearing messages before they are deleted i.e. by copying these messages and storing them at a different location. The same applies to media files also, one can always take a screenshot and save a photo before it gets deleted.
