Legal Age to Drink in Delhi Now 21 Announced by Manish Sisodia
Recently, Delhi declared that it will decrease the legal age to drink in Delhi now 21 years. The current legal drinking age in Delhi is 25. Along with this, the government also said that it would close all government liquor shops. Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia announced in a press conference, “The lawful age to drink in Delhi will now be 21. There will be no alcohol stores in Delhi managed by the government. No new alcohol store will be opened in the National capital.
This statement comes as the Arvid Kejriwal-helmed AAP government made changes to the customs duty policy of Delhi. Delhi government replaced its 2009 version of customs duty policy with a new one reducing the minimum drinking age from 25 to 21. Other changes were also made. The new customs duty policy had elicited diverse replies from the public when the liquor shops Owners lauded the Arvind Kejriwal government for revising the custom duty policy.
While most of the citizens in Delhi embraced the new alcohol policy, many others showed interest that reduced legal drinking would encourage alcoholism among college-going students. Most of the Delhi residents said that to make income, the administration is endangering its future. The youth is our future. They shall be put away from alcoholism in every conceivable way. The management must think about it.
Manish Sisodia, the Deputy CM of Delhi, also said that the new customs duty policy was adopted by the Cabinet today based on the Group of Ministers’ suggestions. Currently, 60 percent of alcohol stores in Delhi are run by the government. He added the government would make sure the distribution of alcohol stores so that liquor mafia are thrown out of the business.An income increase of 20 percent is expected after the changes in the excise department.
The Deputy CM of Delhi, Manish Sisodia, also added that in the national capital-Delhi, 850 liquor shops are authorized by the government. However, liquor mafia-run 2,000 illegal liquor stores in the last two years, more than 7 lakh liquor bottles have been seized, 1939 people arrested.
As per the new rules, liquor shops in Delhi will be permitted to open if they are set in 500 square feet. The windows in such stores should not face the road. Delhi government also stated that liquor prices would rise according to the market trends. According to the new rules, the person less than 21 years of age will not be permitted to enter bars and restaurants for liquor.
The quality of liquor available will be of global standards, and Delhi will have its own standard. As per the new rules, the responsibility of discipline and behavior in liquor stores’ premises will be on the shop owner.
Delhi was one of the only six states or union territories that secured the benchmark at 25. A specialist organization set up by the government approved in December that the legal drinking age in Delhi is turned to 21. In other cities in India like Mumbai, just strong alcohol is prohibited for under 25, while beer and wine are permitted at 21. In main global cities like New York and London, the drinking age is 21 and 18 sequentially.
