When has Delhi ever failed to surprise? When has Delhi ever failed to catch you unaware of the recent happenings? Today also there’s a piece of news from Delhi that has caught all the fitness centres and gyms in a cup!
The recent order of Supreme Court-appointed monitoring committee may bring down the shutters of all the fitness centres including gyms, yoga and meditation centres established across Delhi after August 12, 2008. According to a report of Times of India, all these centres fell under the ‘other’ category of land use under Delhi Master Plan-2021. SC has ordered recently to shut down all the gym & yoga centres shortly.
These centres have reportedly come up in contravention to notification of DDA (Delhi Developmental Authority) issued regarding the cutoff date for such establishments. The apex court panel has directed vice-chairman of DDA, NDMC chairman and commissioners of the three municipal corporations to submit a compliance report before or by October 22, 2019.
In the wake of the SC appointed monitoring panel’s directive, all such fitness centres currently running in violation of MPD-2021 have to be sealed down and the process following due course of law has to be completed by October 18, 2019.

After ordering more than 600 shops to be sealed in New Delhi, Rajouri Garden, a Supreme Court-appointed monitoring committee ordered the closedown of all meditation & Yoga centres as well as gyms which are opened after August 12, 2008, in residential, commercial or non-commercial areas. This rightly came after the ‘Fit India Movement’ was announced with fanfare by Prime Minister, Mr Narender Modi.
The committee members said that according to the rules of the master plan, a gym or yoga centre cannot be opened after the 2008 cut-off date on mixed land use, commercial or even non-notified place. The order reads that the monitoring panel should be intimated by October 22.
With thousands of such fitness centres running in Delhi, the capital city is on the verge of unemployment! With a large number of employees of these fitness centres (some of the centres even being endorsed by celebrities) faced with a layoff, the fraternity has urged the Prime Minister to stall the sealing.
The matter will again come before the court for hearing on October 14, 2019. The sealing of the offending properties should be completed by October 18, 2019, as ordered by the committee.
