Kisan Mahapanchayat at Ramlila Maidan Today: Farmers Protest in Delhi, Expect Traffic Jams

In Delhi, the Samyukta Kisan Morcha, a group of farmers, will carry a “Kisan Mazdoor Mahapanchayat” at the Ramlila Maidan. Where a decision is likely to be enacted to “escalate the fight” against the policies of the central government. 

The Delhi Police has authorized the farmers’ assembly with a condition that the maha panchayat will neither have more than 5,000 participants, nor tractor trolleys would be enabled near the venue. In Delhi, hundreds of farmers from Punjab begin arriving to participate in “Kisan Mazdoor Mahapanchayat” at Ramlila Maidan. The umbrella body of 37 farm unions, the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) which delivered a call for the Mahapanchayat on February 22 at a meeting in Chandigarh, obtained a no-objection certificate for the meeting from the Delhi Police and municipal corporation on March 11. 

Delhi Police officers said that they had asked SKM to decrease the number of participants to 5,000 but expect more than 15,000 people to participate in this meeting. The SKM said around 30,000 farmers come from Punjab to the National capital. The Delhi Police officers also said that they have also furnished a traffic advisory for the commuters to detour roads leading to Central Delhi. 

Hoshiar Singh the leader of Bhartiya Kisan Union (Tikait) said that they are here to recall the Central government of its promises made during the Delhi protest. 

“During our Delhi protest, the central government had delivered few promises. Yet, not even one promise fulfilled so far. So, we are back again to remind the nation that the promises should be fulfilled, and farmers should be deliver capable costs for their crops.” 

On Wednesday, the Gautam Buddh Nagar Police warned commuters about the chance of traffic motion slowing down on a few routes in view of the “Kisan Mazdoor Mahapanchayat” by farmers in Delhi. 

The Gautam Buddh Nagar Police said that diversions could be laying down at routes in Noida near Delhi borders, where intensive checking of vehicles would be accomplished before permitting passage towards the National Capital. 

Western Uttar Pradesh farmers groups are also coming to participate in the Programme. Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait says that there were reports of police arriving at the homes of farmers to stop them from going to Delhi. 

On Wednesday, Jagjit Singh Dallewal, the convener of Bharatiya Kisan Union (Sidhupur) and Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee (KMSC) president Sarwan Singh Pandher said that their unions won’t partake in the Samyukta Kisan Union’s Mahapanchayat in Delhi Ramlila Maidan on Thursday.
