The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has announced that Aadhaar cardholders can now update their 12-digit identification number online for free over the next three months. This move is expected to provide greater convenience and accessibility to residents in India who need to update their demographic details. Typically, updating Aadhaar documents at physical Aadhaar centers costs Rs. 50, and involves submitting Proof of Identity (PoI) and Proof of Address (PoA) documents.
However, with the online update facility, users can avoid this fee and complete the process from the comfort of their own homes. This is particularly helpful for those whose Aadhaar card was published more than a decade ago and whose details may need to be revalidated. By making this service available online, the UIDAI is making it easier for residents to ensure that their Aadhaar details are up to date and accurate.
It is important to note that although the UIDAI has stated that updating demographic details online will enhance service delivery, improve ease of living, and increase authentication success rates, it is not mandatory for Aadhaar cardholders to do so.
The process of updating Aadhaar details online is a simple and quick procedure that can be conducted within minutes. Users will need to upload scanned copies of their original PoI and PoA documents, relying on the specific demographic details that ought to be updated.
