It takes a lot of courage to step into the Indian film industry, Bollywood. It is even harder for those who don’t have someone to help them. Without any connections with directors and producers, it becomes challenging to get noticed and play a role in major movies. However, there are some self-made superstars in the Indian film industry who had no connections in the industry and started their careers from nothing. Despite all these challenges, they still emerged as great actors and became well-known names in the big industry. 

1. Anushka Sharma

Anushka Sharma is a well-known name in the Indian film industry. She completed her education in an army school. Her father is an Indian army officer and her brother also served in the Navy.  However, she was interested in modeling, but never thought of working in the film industry as an actress. Her performance in fashion shows attracted the attention of people. That’s when she decided to start her career as an actress and auditioned for the movie, “Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi” which was a hit movie. Her next movie “Band Bajaa Baraat” was also a successful movie that made her popular. Now, she has worked with all the top actors. She didn’t achieve this success overnight. However, she hasn’t worked in many films because she would only choose the roles that she liked, she remains one of the top actresses. She was also criticized for her appearance but she always didn’t let it bother her and always focused on her career.

2. Kangana Ranaut

Kangana Ranaut is a major face of Bollywood and is also known as the queen of the industry. But to achieve this title she went through many hardships. When everyone in her family was against her modeling and acting career, she left her home alone. She has emerged stronger over the years despite facing many struggles. She debuted with the film “Gangster” and won an award for Best Debut. However, she also picked some roles that made a bad impression on her acting career. But her performance in “Queen” in 2014 changed everything. The film proved to be a turning point in her life that showed her talent. It also changed the way how people viewed her. Her role in “Tanu Weds Manu Returns” increased her popularity and earned her more praise.

Kangana Ranaut is known for her strong and honestly blunt personality. Her journey to stardom wasn’t easy when there was no one by her side when she started.

3. Nawazuddin Siddiqui

Nawazuddin Siddiqui has himself said that he never wanted to become the typical Bollywood hero. His looks and personality weren’t considered perfect like most heroes in Bollywood are known for. But by playing unique roles he made his name. It was his passion to do movies so he started his acting career in theatre. Many people told him that he was not good enough to do acting. However, his passion showed everyone that looks are not always important, but talent is. While studying at the National School of Drama, he also worked as a watchman because he was from a poor family. He was about to give up on his passion but then he was offered a role in “Black Friday” by Anurag Kashyap. However, he wasn’t offered main roles in movies but still became a well-known actor for his strong performances as a villain.

He is a very humble person and often apologizes in interviews for not knowing English. He faced financial difficulties while pursuing theatre in Delhi, but today he is admired by many because of his great acting skills.

4. Vidya Balan

Vidya Balan grew up in a family where nothing was considered more important than education. Although she was very interested in working in movies, she also dreamt of becoming a doctor. She started acting by playing a role in a TV show “Hum Paanch” at the age of 16. Her family wanted her to finish her studies but her father supported her choice. She faced rejection many times because of her weight and tomboyish look. Her acting career took a big turn when she played a role in the Bollywood film “Parineeta”. Her acting was so impressive that she won an award for it. Over time she gained recognition by playing strong and versatile roles and now she is known as one of the self-made superstars in Bollywood.

5. Ranveer Singh

Ranveer Singh started his career in 2010 by playing a role in “Band Baaja Baraat”. Before that, he auditioned everywhere but never used his uncle Anil Kapoor to get work. But after his successful movie, his career improved and he became a well-known actor in Bollywood. To play the role in the movie “Bajirao Mastani” he completely isolated himself to get into the role. He sometimes becomes the center of controversy because of his style and fashion but doesn’t let himself be affected by others’ opinions and does what he wants to.

When talking about struggle these actors are always mentioned because of their journey of stepping into Bollywood. When there are some star kids who always remain highlighted, there are some enthusiasts who work really hard to make their place in this big industry. This is just a small list of actors who made their name on their own. There are many other talented actors who went through many hardships to gain what they are today.
