Demystifying Citizenship Applications : A Detailed Look at the Online Portal for the 2019 Act

One month Before the Lok Sabha elections 2024, the Indian Government has announced the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), approved by parliament in 2019. 

The act permitted all the members of six minority communities from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh to get Indian citizenship quickly. While acquainted with the rules, the government said the act’s main purpose is to confirm the accurate resettlement of these disturbed minorities, who have experienced years of oppression. 

In order to make an application for citizenship under CAA 2019, the Ministry of Home Affairs has announced that the application form will be submitted in an online mode on an official web portal named Indian Citizenship Online. The applicant will have to deliver an application for registration under section 6B in electronic form to the Empowered Committee through the District Level Committee as may be informed by the center. 

How to Apply for Citizenship Under CAA? 

1. Go to the website Indian Citizenship online portal, “Click to submit an application for Indian Citizenship under CAA 2019” option. 

2. Fill your mobile number and the CAPTCHA code, and move on to the next page. 

3. Enter your email ID, name, and the CAPTCHA Code. 

4. Press the Submit button. 

5. Check your email ID or mobile for an OTP. Enter the OTP and verify them. 

6. Re-enter the CAPTCHA code for extra verification. 

7. Open the login window and enter your email ID mobile number, and CAPTCHA code. Click on “Continue”. 

8. You will get another OTP on your registered mobile number. Enter the OTP and re-enter the CAPTCHA code. Click on “Verify and Proceed.”

9. An option “Click here to initiate fresh application” will appear, after successful verification. 

10. Reply some questions about the applicant’s location, including pre-2014 residence, place of birth, and duration of stay. 

What Happens After Online Application? 

The District Level Committee directed by the Designated Officer shall verify the validity of the applications filed under the act. The designed officer shall manage the pledge of adherence to the applications after the examination of the documents. 

Obeying this, the officer will sign the pledge of adherence and deliver the same in electronic form along with confirmation regarding the verification of documents to the Empowered Committee. 

What If an Applicant Fails to Appear in Person for Oath of Allegiance? 

If an applicant is not able to appear in person to take a pledge of adherence contempt delivering many opportunities, the District Level Committee can deliver the application in question to the Empowered Committee for apperception a refusal. 

Document Needed for Application on CAA Portal

The needed documents list for application has been delivered, which includes passports, birth certificates, and other additional documents issued by the governments of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, among others. The documents must present that the applicant entered India on or before December 31, 2014. 

What Do Those Without Documents Do?

The center can permit any valid or expired documents from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, for those without important paperwork. Certificates or residence permits issued by the Foreigners Regional Registration Officer or Foreigners Registration Officer in India are also permitted. 

Numerous states, including West Bengal, Kerala, Punjab, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and Bihar, have passed resolutions against the Act. The Indian government has confirmed that the Act does not affect the rights of Indian citizens. It does not change the legal procedure of acquiring Indian citizenship by any foreigner.
